Wilhelm Bartelmann And The Strandkorb

Exaly 172 years ago, on this very day was born Wilhelm Bartelmann, German basket maker, desiger of the famous Nordi Strandkorb.
The story behind this “project” is that in 1882, Wilhelm, then 37, was invited by a German lady Elfriede von Maltzahn to design a special relaxation chair, because that year she had been unable to spend the warm summer days at her favourite Baltic Sea beach, being hindered by rheumatic pain. Wilhelm Bartelmann gladly accepted the challenge and designed the beautiful woven chairs which have been a real treat and colourful spots on the windy beaches of the Baltic and the beloved and most popular Sylt beaches on the North Sea.
